Yesterday the vet came out.

The vet came yesterday. He had me walk my sweet Zelda around. Just a few steps. He's encouraged. She still isn't out of the woods yet, but we're hopeful. She probably will never be able to be ridden again. And when she gets better, after we turn her back out into the pasture she could damage it again irreparably. So for the rest of her life, I'll probably be on pins and needles. He said it's like an athlete injuring a leg. The athlete never knows if the leg will hold up until he gets back out there and plays the game.

That made me think of writing. Yesterday, I tried to make every excuse in the book to avoid sending a query out. But then the vet made me think of just getting out there and doing it. I sent two. WOOHOO! The icy waters I put myself melted away.

It felt really good after hitting the send button. I did forget to add that I wanted to query simultaneously though. Shouldn't I stop until hearing from these two and then pick it back up again? After adding the sentence I overlooked, of course. Providing one of these two agents say nn nn no. UGH! That word has NO place in a writer's vocabulary.

Thanks for all the responses I had yesterday. It does a writer good. :) And thanks for all the good wishes for Zelda. She loved hearing about them. :)

  1. Glad to hear that Zelda is still holding her own! Simultaneous submissions make me nervous too. I know I'm supposed to do it, but 9 times out of 10 I don't. It slows things...no, it brings things to a halt, and I know that. I just keep writing in the meantime.

  2. Amy- It does bring things to a halt, but I've started my new WIP. That is a good thing.

I'll wait! Thank you for thinking of Zelda. She use to be a barrel racer, so she hates standing around. It worries me that she'll run too hard when she finally has that freedom. :)

  3. Glad to hear that Zelda is doing better! I hope the leg is better than they think.

As for simultaneous submissions, I think as long as it's just a query letter, you don't have to worry about sending more than one at a time. And I've sat in on panels of agents who say they expect that. I'm pretty sure the only time you need to say it's a simultaneous submission is when a partial or full has been requested by more than one agent.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this.

  4. BJ- That relieves my mind completely if that's the case. Which would mean, I could query more. :)

  7. Glad to hear Zelda's doing okay.

Congrats on sending the query out. I almost threw up (sorry for the visual) the first time I sent one out. The nerves, the nerves . . . thankfully, Sister Margarita (one of the three sisters of the Order of Maintaining Sanity) was right by my side.

    Best of luck.

  8. Although Zelda's leg still seems uncertain, the news from the vet seems encouraging, Robyn. I hope she can enjoy a nice and relaxing rest of her life.

Congratulations on sending out the queries! I personally think you should wait just a little to see what sort of response you get. At some point, you'll probably want to send to more than two at a time, but I'd ramp it up slowly.

  9. Davin, thanks for the advice. I think I will stick to the two at a time for right now. I do NOT want to rush this. :)

Tess, thanks! I hope I'm a trooper. Well see when the results from my queries come in. :)

  12. Oh, your poor horse. Hoping she has a great recovery.

I wouldn't mention the simultaneous submissions. I think it is assumed. Best of luck!

  16. Hopefully Zelda will be all right. :D

Yay you for querying! You can do this. You'll hear nos sometimes, but it only takes one yes. (Trite but true.) Hoping you find an agent that will be as passionate about your story as you are. :D
